Figueroa to Opt for Free Agency

Adam Rubin of the Daily News is reporting that Nelson Figueroa is planning on opting for free agency rather than join the Mets triple-A club. Figueroa, who made a spot start for the Mets last week, and performed pretty well, is making a surprising move turning down the job at Buffalo.

Figueroa, who had to pass though waivers after being designated for assignment by the Mets, went unclaimed by any team which makes his decision somewhat curious. Clearly there wasn’t much interest in him and his minimum salary, so it posses the question where does he think is he going to go now. At least with the Mets he would be called upon as the team’s primary spot starter in similar cases to last week. The only other option would be for Nelson to play abroad, which he has done in the past.
