A hole at second base

The Mets seem unable to find a taker for Luis Castillo and his massive contract. There was talk he may be moved to the Cubs for Jason Marquis and cash, however that now seems unlikely.

If the Mets are unable to move Castillo, they would be unable to sign Orlando Hudson who Jerry Manuel was hoping to have in his lineup in 2009. Odds are the Mets are going to go with a platoon at second consisting of Castillo when and if he is ever healthy, and Daniel Murphy who showed a lot of promise down the stretch last year, and offensively would be a nice bat to have in the lineup.

The largest problem Murphy would present would be the lack of a number two hitter in the Mets lineup. Murphy is still too young, and although he showed great discipline last year Howard Johnson would like him to continue to develop some power.

Carlos Beltran loves to hit in the two hole, but unless the Mets bring in Ibanez or the unpopular Dunn, the team will be struggling to find a guy to move Reyes over all season.
