Cubs have other plans if Peavy deal falls through

ESPN is reporting that the Cubs claim they will have the ability to sign deals even thought a sale is said to be imminent. This put the Cubs in contention for a stud outfielder along with the Braves and the Mets.

Furthermore, it appears likely that the Cubs won’t trade for Jake Peavy, and the Padres will retain him until the trading deadline in 2009. If this happens expect the Cubs to seek out Jamie Moyer as a midlevel option if they can rid themselves of Jason Marquis. It also makes Cubs bigger players than the Mets in the search for an outfielder as such names as Bobby Abreu and Raul Ibanez have been mentioned on the top of the Cubs wish list.
