Reyes Batting Third Makes Sense

Joseph Del Grippo of Bleacher Report had an interesting article yesterday about why Jose Reyes is best suited to bat third. Among his biggest reasons were the facts that Luis Castillo has a better obp than Jose, he has led the team in hits each of the last three years, and next year with Carlos Delgado likely to be gone the Mets will have a big hole in their lineup to fill, so why not get Reyes comfortable with that position now.

Furthermore with Reyes batting in the third spot in the order that moves Carlos Beltran into the second position where he prefers to be, and we all remember how Beltran hit for the Astros batting in the two spot.

With a lineup of featuring Castillo hitting first, it takes the sac bunt that he loved to use so often in previous years. No longer would the middle of the lineup be hitting with unnecessary outs on the board.

An order of Castillo, Beltran, Reyes, Wright, Delgado, Church/Tatis, Murphy, and Schneider certainly does have its advantages, and would make the Mets a much more aggressive team. The sort of hit and run offense that Jerry Manuel prefers, as opposed to the play it safe sacrifice the runner over offense of Willie Randolph.
